Appreciating Communication and Culture (How Do You Appreciate The Course)
As a Development Communication student this course is an eye opener for me to a new avenue towards my career. Being in the business world, it sharpens my knowledge in transacting business. And i realized that in the field of education age doesn’t matter. My teachers in the Open University are older than me and my classmates belonged to the different ethnic group, but because of professionalism and the spirit of good communication we attain good friendship ,and for sure this will lead to a good social change in the academe. Here aside from learning new things, i gained new friends. Some of them became my facilitators to the educational field trip that i organized . Madam Tagle, Sir Olsim and Madam Junio. Also i learned some ideas from them.
This course helped me to appreciate the cultural aspect of an individual. That the cultural background of an individual is their identity. And understanding the culture of an individual will help us to understand people since most individual live and function within the network of sub culture and through this they can relate to one another. Teenagers are the example of sub culture they behave differently and the mode of their dressing is also different.Through this course my dealings with my nieces and nephews changed, i learn to appreciate and understand their attitude and realized that i belong to the old school and they are in the new generation accompanied by the new technology, but sometimes they are my tutor if i can’t understand some features of my gadget, they are goo at that. I always correct them though and remind them the values that we learned from our grandparents.

The topic about culture in collectivism and individualism is an added knowledge on my part. Also i learned that the term Ethnocentrism enhances the conviction that one’s beliefs and behaviors reinforce the tendency to confirm and defend one’s society and this will lead to nationalism and love of he country.
Before when i am a new student of DEV comm, i cant decipher what a world i am getting myself into because when i enroll here i just rely on the word Communication of the course being offered. My purpose then is just to attain a degree to elevate my status in the world of business as i am into the Tourism industry as a city tourism front liner. I am a tour coordinator of travel agencies. But now i realized how important Developed Communication is in our life. It teaches the importance of cultural aspects of people, and how to have a proper dealings with them. But i learned that all of us have similar biological needs such as food and clothing, the way we dress and the food we like most indicates the point of our origin. But culture is learned, it is not instinctive or innate, it is acquired through experience. All of us have varied cultures and thanks for the enlightenment of this course that all the things i have learned on this semester is worthy and of great help on my daily life and in my business transactions.
